Founded in 1972 by Roberto Mueller, Pony soon became one of the most important athletic brands in the world. Renowned for being at the forefront of technological innovation, Pony also benefited from celebrity endorsement, By the late 1970s, many top NBA basketball players were wearing Pony’s chevron design, but sporting legends from other disciplines have also been associated with the brand, including boxer Muhammad Ali.
Certainly in the early days, Pony was a little- known brand outside the US. However, that all changed with the release of the Linebacker model. Nowadays, the Pony brand is more often associated with fashion than sports – an image that has been cemented with The One and Only collection, the brand’s 2004 fashion deal with music icon Snoop Dogg.  In 2003, Global Brand Marketing Inc., the owner of Dry-shoD shoes and Global Feet retail store, and the global footwear licensee of Diesel, XOXO, Nautica and Mecca, acquired a majority share of Pony International, the company that owns the brand, from entertainment talent agency The Firm. The future certainly looks bright for Pony.
