The Marathon 80 was the Marathon Trainer’s predecessor.The latter was first produced in 1981.

The Marathon Trainer, known as the Marathon Training in some parts of the world, has a more aggressive appearance than the Marathon 80. The concave trefoil outsole and Dellinger web on the midsole give both versions a futuristic look.
  This shoe has gone through some changes since its release in the early 1980s. All of the uppers on the earlier models were made of nylon mesh and velour, but in ! 985 the design of the upper was slightly altered. The new models had fewer TPU eyelets than the earlier models, and featured the slogan ‘Marathon TR’ on the adidas stripes and a flex notch on the toe box.
 In 1991, the Marathon Trainer II was released, and 1992 saw the first leather editions, adidas reissued the Marathon Trainer in 2000, and in 2002 special high-grade leather editions were produced in earth-tone colours.
